About the Staff Internship Program

Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group (MAPMG) is committed to developing the next generation of healthcare leaders through our immersive and comprehensive 12-week Summer Internship Program.

The Summer Internship Program is designed to expose undergraduate and graduate-level students to a wide range of career opportunities in the healthcare field, while allowing them to develop professional skills that can be transferred to any occupation or industry. Interns work along-side experienced professionals in Strategy and Communications, Project Management, Data Analytics, Research, Quality, Finance, Human Resources, and other teams and departments.

Our internship program focuses on providing aspiring healthcare professionals with the ability to develop their knowledge and skills in their field of study through hands-on work experience, mentorship opportunities, and cross-collaboration with various departments and teams. During the internship program, students grow their verbal communication skills, time and project management capabilities, and hone presentation and networking skills.

**Please note, while we recruit for interns on a rolling basis in the Spring and Fall semesters, the Summer Internship Program is the most robust and structured, as we have the largest cohort in the Summer.

Intern testimonials

"This past summer I worked at Mid-Atlantic Permanente Research Institute on a research project examining the impact of chronic dementia on post-COVID conditions (PCC). I designed and served as the primary investigator, as well as wrote the abstract in preparation for publication. This opportunity deepened my understanding of neuromechanics and its interplay within the immune system. I also gained extensive experience in data abstraction and statistical analysis in programs such as SAS. I learned how to adapt to being able to work independently and take ownership of my project, while having strong guidance and mentorship. It was a great pre-professional experience!"

Nicholas “Cole” Kendrick
Research and Clinical Care Intern
"I’ve had the privilege of being an Artificial Intelligence Intern at MAPMG for multiple summers, and it has been an immensely rewarding and educational experience. Everyone that I have interacted with has been supportive, welcoming, and easy to work with. Working closely with cutting-edge startups like DermaSensor and Kheiron Medical gave me invaluable insights on how to quickly develop patient-driven solutions to global problems. I absolutely loved working with MAPMG’s Data Science Team, honing my Python and SQL programming skills on a daily basis. I learned a lot from MAPMG working full-time throughout the year, and especially during my summers with the company. It was exciting to be able to contribute to data science projects at the country's leading health system while in school."

Jay Gopal
Artificial Intelligence Intern
"During my internship, I had the opportunity to analyze and improve the flu prediction model. My work focused on refining the code to ensure it remained accurate and efficient, especially with changing flu vaccination strategies. I also developed an XGBoost model to predict flu shot demand by location and week, which I hope will contribute to the team's efforts going forward. Throughout this experience, I learned valuable lessons in optimizing code for performance, data wrangling and cleaning, and creating effective testing and training data for model predictions. I want to extend a big thank you to Gerardo, Patrick, Drew and Will for their support and helpful guidance throughout my time here."

Linda Peng
Quality Intern
"During my internship at MAPMG, I had the invaluable opportunity to work on a Census Random Study, analyzing hospital inpatient data to improve healthcare operations. This project allowed me to develop crucial skills in data analysis, particularly in using Oracle SQL for complex data extraction and Tableau for creating insightful visualizations. A key aspect involved extracting and analyzing patient encounter data across various care settings, which significantly enhanced my understanding of healthcare pathways and the importance of data-driven decision-making in a medical setting. Working under the mentorship a Senior Data Analyst, I gained profound insights into healthcare analytics and its practical applications. His guidance in interpreting complex healthcare data and translating findings into actionable recommendations was instrumental in my professional growth. Overall, this internship has been a transformative experience, providing me with real-world application of my MPH studies and preparing me for a career in public health informatics and healthcare quality improvement."

Safa Shahid
Data Analyst Intern
"During my internship at Kaiser Permanente, I had the opportunity to work on a range of impactful projects, honing my skills in both frontend and backend development. One of my key contributions was single-handedly developing a shareholder ballot voting tool. I built the frontend using React and the backend in .NET C# with REST APIs. This tool enabled eligible employees to vote on shareholder matters specific to their service areas, while securely recording and managing the responses. It was a complex project that required seamless integration between the frontend and backend to ensure a smooth user experience and accurate data management. In addition to the voting tool, I also contributed to another project focused on OBGYN physician training management."

Sushma Nukula
Web Development Intern
"My internship at the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group has been extremely rewarding. As a Human Resources Analyst Intern, I gained extensive knowledge about healthcare operations and supported various projects aimed at streamlining workflows. Using clinical datasets to track information about physicians and staff, I worked on building dashboards to visualize key trends and support decision-making. Aside from working with the physician services, I created interactive dashboards to report on employee satisfaction and turnover. With a background in SQL, SAS, Excel, and PowerBI, my time as an intern enabled me to use my skills in a new context to help my team make data-oriented decisions. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at MAPMG, and I am excited about future possibilities to work in healthcare as a data analyst."
